Who We Are
The mission of the Hartford Preservation Alliance (HPA) is to preserve and revitalize Hartford's unique architectural heritage and neighborhood character.

Buildings with distinctive architecture define our downtown and the neighborhood character of Hartford. But in recent years demolition has become the common response to problems of blight and neighborhood revitalization.

Preserving Hartford's historic architecture maintains ties to our heritage and is a key element to the revitalization of our city.

Hundreds of buildings have been demolished over the last few years, many of which were part of the essential fabric of the neighborhoods that grew in Hartford from the 1880s through the 1920s. Many more buildings are in danger of being leveled.

HPA views these historic buildings as community assets that can play an important role in creating value and stabilizing neighborhoods in the city. The Hartford Preservation Alliance is seeking to save these buildings and strengthen those neighborhoods before it is too late.

The Hartford Preservation Alliance is a professionally-operated, volunteer-assisted 501(c)(3) organization that relies upon its membership to support its programs, activities and services. What We Do

HPA focuses on educating the public about preservation issues, convening and collaborating with interested parties for positive change, advocating for rehabilitation and proper "mothballing" of older structures, and placing appropriate properties on state and federal historic registries. In fulfilling this agenda, we believe that HPA is contributing to Hartford's quality of life and to its future prospects.

We pursue the following strategies to achieve our goals:
  • Influencing the quality of Hartford's built environment by promoting rehabilitation of historic properties and offering guidance on urban planning policies as an alternative to demolition.
  • Advising government agencies on policies which will promote architectural and historic preservation.
  • Developing alliances with area preservation and neighborhood revitalization organizations.
  • Cataloguing information about significant historic properties.
  • Identifying methods of historic preservation.
  • Promoting the economic and social benefits of historic preservation.
  • Identifying financial, technical and governmental resources needed to facilitate historic preservation.
  • Monitoring all proposed demolitions in the City of Hartford.
Each year, during Preservation Month in May, the HPA presents the Hartford Preservation Alliance Award to individuals and organizations whose activities during the previous year have made a significant contribution to historic and architectural preservation in Hartford, Connecticut.
