Three Hartford properties ~ 560 Park Street (Immaculate Conception Church), 198 Wethersfield Avenue (Charles B. Haskell House), and 175 Main Street ~ were recently awarded Historic Preservation and Technical Assistance Grants (HPTAG). Every HPTAG awarded creates one or more short term jobs that employ architects, structural, mechanical and civil engineers, historic and preservation consultants, energy use consultants, technology firms and planning companies.
The Immaculate Conception Shelter & Housing Corp. was awarded $19,695 to examine the adaptive reuse of the former Immaculate Conception Church. The church, located at 560 Park Street and an 1894 Gothic Revival design by Michael O’ Donohue, is a contributing resource in the Frog Hollow National Register District. Focus group meetings with all local stakeholders, architectural plans, remediation assessments and cost analyses will be performed to determine appropriate reuse of the building and may serve to reinforce other preservation efforts in the Frog Hollow neighborhood. HPA was pleased to provide site history research for this grant as well as a letter of recommendation to the CT Trust.
The Connecticut Community for Additiction Recovery was award to conduct a Capital Needs Assessment of its office located in the Charles B. Haskel House (1896), a contributing resource in the Parkside National Register District in Hartford. This property at 198 Wethersfield Avenue is one of the 10 surviving Queen Anne residences built between 1880 and 1900 that are included in the Parkside National Historic District. Having already conducted an energy audit, the project goal is to preserve the historic attributes of the building while improving building efficiency and conserving energy. HPA was pleased to provide site history research for this grant.
The Hispanic Health Council was awarded $16,600 to develop bid-level plans and specifications for design of a new energy efficient HVAC system of its historic Main Street building. 175 Main Street consists of two circa 1900 mixed use 4-story buildings joined by a 1984 infill structure designed by James Vance and is a contributing resource in the South Green National Register District. HPA helped guide the process for application. The project will allow the Council to save money by lowering operating costs while maintaining and preserving the historic integrity of the building. Maintaining the buildings are essential so that they may carry out their mission and we applaud HHC's dedication to the preservation initiative.

| City of Hartford Parks Receive Landslide Designation |
The Cultural Landscape Foundation has designated the City of Hartford Parks System as one of 16 Landslide Sites for 2009. Landslide is an annual compendium of significant landscapes and landscape features at risk for alteration or destruction. It examines threatened landscapes and is designed to educate the public about and rally support for these sites.

November 29, 2010 ~ Governor M. Jodi Rell accounced that she is seeking $4 million in bonding make improvements at 129 Layfayette Street, the former Second Church of Christ, Scientist. Gov. Rell is quoted in The Hartford Courant as saying "This project fits neatly with my administration's emphasis on smart growth. Rather than building a new building, this acquisition preserves an historic structure and spares virgin land from new construction."
